South Sudan, a strife-torn nation, finally had something good to celebrate as its basketball national team earned its first Olympic berth after the South Sudanese claimed their second win in the FIBA World Cup on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Carlik Jones, an American-South Sudanese guard for the Chicago Bulls, scored 26 points and dished out 15 assists as the team defeated Angola 101-78 for its second straight win.Relegated to the classification round after a 1-2 card in the opening group stage, South Sudan clinched its second win on its very first FIBA World Cup following an 87-68 victory over Gilas Pilipinas last Thursday.

Wenyen Gabriel also stepped up bid for South Sudan as he had double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Marial Shayok added 18 points, Nuni Omot had 17 points, and Majok Deng 10 points.Childe Dundao led Angola with 21 points, while Jilson Bango had 10 points and 13 boards.For a country that has been affected by war for several years, Joes believes that the national team has what it takes to compete in the coming events, including the Olympics.''It's very bright.
