In recent years, South Park’s release schedule has undergone an interesting shift. Ever since the show’s co-creators signed a $900 million deal with Paramount+, the show hasn’t returned to its tradition of producing 10 to 15 new episodes per year.
This was followed by the short, six-episode South Park season 25, which ran from February to March 2022, and the two-part special South Park: The Streaming Wars in June and July. Thus, when South Park season 26 aired from February to March 2023, viewers thought they could expect another two-part, feature-length special in summer 2023. However, the summer of 2023 came and went without any news from the show.
South Park Can Bring Back Halloween Episodes In 2023 If its next special arrives in October, Paramount+ can bring back one of South Park’s most beloved traditions with a new Halloween episode. 2022’s specials had already aired well before the end of summer, but season 23’s late special could be great news for viewers who enjoyed classic outings like South Park season 3, episode 10, “Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery,” or season 10, episode 11, “Hell on Earth 2006.
South Park’s Halloween episodes work particularly well, as the series is already quite gruesome at times and its plots have never been too wedded to logic. The show features horror elements in its most ordinary episodes. In fact, South Park’s original premise involved aliens, Bigfoot, and all manner of other paranormal phenomena. Even the monstrous ManBearPig, which played a pivotal role in South Park: The Streaming Wars, owes its design to the monster movies of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
South Park’s Special Formula Could Revive Another Tradition If South Park does another two-part special, then the second part could be the first South Park Christmas episode in four years. While South Park’s Halloween episodes have historically been successful because of the show’s penchant for extreme gore and love of all things horror, its Christmas specials have been popular because they allow South Park to undercut the cloying sentimentality of the holiday season.
