Gutsy performance from USL Championship team falls just short as Major League Soccer's Sounders advance to tournament's round of 32
Fredy Montero scored in extra time, and Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders held off the upstart San Diego Loyal SC 5-4 on Wednesday night to advance in theThe win advances the Sounders to the round of 32 in the take-all-comers tournament. The team is looking for a record fifth U.S. Open Cup championship.
The Loyal, which advanced to face Seattle with a win over ALBION San Diego, battled the higher-division Sounders throughout the match. Reed Baker-Whiting scored in the 101st minute, giving Seattle a 4-3 lead. Jackson Simba’s header goal in the 116th minute tied the match and appeared to set up a penalty shootout. But Simba was called for a penalty inside the box as time ticked down in the second extra time period, and Montero netted the penalty-kick goal.Joe Corona scored twice for the Loyal.
Montero led the Sounders with two goals, while Ethan Dobbelaere , Paul Rothrock and Baker-Whiting also found the back of the net. The Loyal return home Saturday for a game against the El Paso Locomotives. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. inside Torero Stadium.
