Sony has just unveiled a revamp of its PlayStation 5 console set to arrive this holiday season that will see the console redressed into a much more slender and compact design. Shrinking the PS5 down for its mid-life refresh, though, seems like a pretty minor detail compared with the signal the new model sends out about Sony’s commitment to physical medial, though.
The 4K Blu-ray format managed to persevere, happily, albeit in rather niche form, despite the lack of PS4 Pro support. Nonetheless, the PS4 Pro situation meant that physical media fans found themselves fearing the worst as we approached the unveiling of the full specifications of PlayStation 5 console in 2020. Especially as the gaming world even back then already seemed to be moving inexorably away from physical discs towards an all-digital download future.
It’s turned out, though, that it wouldn’t be too much to ask at all. In fact, Sony’s announcement of its PS5 refresh plans reveal that its support for 4K Blu-ray movie discs has actually improved rather than fallen away.digital-only console can easily add 4K disc playback later as finances allow. For starters, Sony is going to continue to offer not one but two new PS5 versions: One with a built in disc drive, and one without.
So far from abandoning 4K Blu-ray support, Sony has gone the extra design mile to find a clever way of making 4K Blu-ray playback available with BOTH of its PS5 refresh models. You could even argue that by adding a cleverly designed 4K Blu-ray accessory to its upcoming PS5 product range, Sony has given the format a welcome extra push of publicity it wouldn’t have enjoyed if Sony had ‘just’ launched separate disc and digital versions as it did with the original PS5s.
