Yet, instead of being a"smoking gun" that proved that the civilian infrastructure may have been in the crosshairs on Monday, posts quickly made the rounds on social media that suggested it was a Western air-defense missile that struck the hospital.
Schmidt explained that air defense weapons like the AIM-120 and the PAC-2 that are fired by the U.S. Patriot air defense system are"hit-to-kill" platforms, designed specifically to target incoming missile threats. Yet, few waited for any confirmation. Those who have previously shown support for Russia on social media were quick to present the narrative that it had to be a Western-made missile without presenting any real evidence.
"Sowing doubt even on the obvious is part of Russia's standard methodology of deflection, whataboutism, and obfuscation that takes advantage of domestic woes and grievances in the West to create skepticism and distrust of official sources of information and to be distrustful even the public's own eyes and judgment," she added.
