This week's powerful storm hitting Southern California is expected to last through Saturday but will start to dissipate by the evening.
The blast coming down from the Gulf of Alaska is bringing the coldest temperatures and heaviest precipitation levels of this winter.A blizzard warning -- the first issued in the area since 1989 -- took effect early Friday morning in the Los Angeles and Ventura County mountains, and it will remain in place until 4 p.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service initially said up to 5 feet of snow could accumulate in the mountains above 4,500 feet, accompanied by wind gusts topping 80 mph that will create "near zero visibility.'' Higher elevations could see as much as 8 feet of snow, with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible at elevations between 2,000 and 4,500 feet, impacting major mountain passes.Here's a timeline of what to expect from the storm:- Rain and snow will continue.
Sunday is expected to be mostly clear, while some clouds will return Monday - and then a new storm system is moving in Tuesday.On Saturday, the region will see a high of 51 degrees and the rain will grow more intense. About 1-2 inches of rain are expected in the Los Angeles area, with up to 5 inches at the coast and valleys, and possibly as much as 7 inches in the foothills.A high of 48 is expected on Saturday with 3-5 inches of rain coming down, potentially causing flash flooding in burn areas.
