Snapchat's CEO said 20 million teens use the app, but only 200,000 use the family center controls.
With many teens spending more time on their own during the summer school break, Snapchat is rolling out a new set of tools to help keep them safe while on the app.
"Snapchat is designed to for real friends to communicate," said Rachel Hochhauser, head of safety operations at Snapchat. Snapchat's CEO said 20 million teens use the app, but only 200,000 use the family center controls. The center controls are set to help caregivers gain insight about who their teens are communicating with and report any accounts.
The new tools help teens protect themselves with expanded pop-up warnings if they receive a message from someone who is blocked or has been reported by others. "When somebody makes that smart choice to block somebody from contacting them, it doesn't just block the initial account, it blocks any account connected to that initial account," said Hochhauser."What we know about bullying and harassment is that is is repeated behavior," Hochhauser said,It will also be harder for strangers to send a friend request."Honestly, the work is never done when we talk about the safety of our users," said Hochhauser.
