Audiences may be curious whether the 2006 action movie, Smokin' Aces, has a follow-up. Luckily, the movie does have a part 2, which premiered in 2008.
Although it may be more obscure than its predecessor, Smokin' Aces 2 has already happened. Written and directed by Joe Carnahan of The A-Team fame, Smokin' Aces has an ensemble cast including Ryan Reynolds, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Common, Alicia Key, Chris Pine, and Matthew Fox. Set in Lake Tahoe, the movie revolves around a Vegas-based magician named Buddy Israel, who faces the wrath of Mob boss Primo Sparazza when he agrees to turn state's evidence against Sparazza's mob.

However, the movie's revenue told a different story, given that it earned $57.3 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $17 million. Even its earnings from DVDs, which mounted up to $35,714,831, were no less impressive considering how they were more than double the movie's budget.
Smokin' Aces 2 centers on an FBI desk jockey named Walter Weed. When the Bureau discovers an assassination plot against him, Agent Baker and his team try protecting him against a clan of deadly and gimmicky assassins who will stop at nothing to win the hefty bounty on Weed's head. Strangely, instead of ensuing after the first movie's events, Smokin' Aces 2: Assasins' Ball serves as a prequel to the original Joe Carnahan movie.
Why Smokin' Aces 2 Was A Prequel, Not A Sequel To be successful, Smokin' Aces 2 had to capitalize on the fame of the first film and draw the attention of the franchise's existing audiences. The best possible way to achieve that was to continue Smokin' Aces' character beats in a sequel story. Unfortunately, the film could not possibly do that since most primary characters from Smokin' Aces die towards the end of its storyline.
Despite tying into a prequel narrative, Smokin' Aces 2 marks the return of only a few characters from the original Joe Carnahan movie. However, its prequel story gives it a logical reason to include Tommy Flanagan's Lazlo Soot and the Tremor extended family, who expand the lore surrounding Chris Pine, Kevin Durand, and Maury Sterling's Tremor brothers.
