and the United States prepares for a critical contest on Friday against England in Qatar, Canetti and Co. are already envisioning what the 2026 World Cup will be like.

Joining Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Toronto and Mexico City, among others, as host cities for an expanded 2026 tournament that will feature 80 matches bouncing between the U.S., Canada and Mexico was a monumental first step for Houston. With the soccer world currently zeroed in on Qatar morning and night, and thrilling matches taking over televisions and watch parties across the globe —The local build up to ’26 will begin in the new year.

A timeline hasn’t been provided for when 2026 matches will be attached to specific cities, Canetti said. Countries and teams visiting Houston won’t be announced until a draw is held closer to ’26. Currently waiting on the big-picture local radar: Fundraising, community involvement and operational logistics.
