A new report concludes that climate change will threaten food supply because of land use change. But it also says land use will be a key tool in fighting climate change.
Swedish youth climate activist Greta Thunberg smiles during a meeting with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change representatives after the launch of a special IPCC report on climate change and land on August 8, 2019 in Geneva. The way humans use land will be both a consequence and a determination of how much the planet warms over the next decades, a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded.
A large share of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the agricultural and forestry sectors, and in turn, they will be among the sectors most impacted by climate change. “Agriculture, forestry and other types of land use account for 23% of human greenhouse gas emissions,” said Jim Skea, co-chair of IPCC Working Group III. “At the same time natural land processes absorb carbon dioxide equivalent to almost a third of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry.”
Less land used for grazing animals for meat would mean more land available for bioenergy, forests and natural ecosystems.
