This new company aims to make it easier for small satellites to take off:

Earlier this month, the Chicago-based firm announced that by end of year, it will debut a portal that will be an"online storefront" for the products and services needed for a space mission.

"It allows the customer to focus on their data and their payload, and leave the hard part of the space mission to us," said CEO David Hurst in an interview. His company has been bootstrapped since 2015, and recently attracted a round of seed funding. The amount and the funders have not yet been disclosed publicly, since Orbital Transports is a startup and its revenues are kept private.

Satellite refueling, as shown is the artist's conception, is something that Orbital Transports may pursue. While Hurst did not specify which missions his company has worked on, he said a typical mission takes about 12 to 18 months to prepare. He and his seven employees, working with subcontractors, once finished mission preparation in five months, but ordinarily he prefers to have more time with the client.

"Part of our business model is to build a network of partner companies to fulfill different aspects of a space mission. We operate as a general contractor, coordinating partners," he said.
