Summary Slow Horses boss Will Smith discusses the chances of adapting all nine novels written by Mick Herron. Originally premiering in April 2022, the AppleTV+ show adapts the Herron’s Slough House novel series which centers around a bunch of MI5 rejects who are thrust into administrative purgatory following a case of gross incompetence at their previous jobs.
“ Yeah. I think Mick is writing the ninth now, but we’ll have to see what happens. Depends on what Apple wants and what the appetite is, but I definitely have the kind of leave-them-wanting-more rather than the outstay-your-welcome instinct … But the world of the show is there to be mined. Mick has written a terrific book called The Secret Hours, which is a sort of sidebar book that fills in the backstory of Lamb, and he brings in all these other existing characters.
Slow Horses has already been confirmed for season 5, and it is expected that it will adapt the fifth book in Herron’s series, titled London Rules. However, it will be interesting to see how the series proceeds after season 5. While the show is currently still one of Apple’s top shows, adaptations of this nature can become tricky, especially in the long run and, as Smith rightly pointed out, it might be better to bow out while the hype is loudest.
