William Eklund had two goals and an assist Friday in the San Jose Sharks’ Rookie Faceoff win over Anaheim Ducks at Tech CU Arena.
Even though general manager Mike Grier improved the Sharks’ forward depth in the offseason, there could still be a place for Eklund on the season-opening 23-man roster.
Kevin Labanc could potentially fill those shoes, but that’s no guarantee, and for the record, the left-shot Eklund made sure to say earlier Friday that he can play right wing as well. He had four assists in nine games for the Sharks last season before he was returned to Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League.
One of the reasons why the Sharks sent a crestfallen Eklund back to Sweden was because of their concern that his 5-foot-10, 176-pound frame wasn’t ready for the physical toll of an 82-game season.
