American singer and multiple Grammy winner Gladys Knight has slammed why members of K-pop boy band BTS were given the chance to meet US President Joe Biden in the White House but not her. ManilaBulletin
Knight is the president of Riccino Optical Inc., which is seeking a US government contract to supply Covid-19 personal protective equipment .
In her letter, Knight complained that “it appears that the government procurement system is creating impediments to prevent African American owned businesses such as ours from supplying the needed goods at pre-pandemic pricing.” Knight said it “is too much to tolerate” when BTS is welcomed at the White House before her who “suffered indignities of the Jim Crow South while touring with Sam Cook, and other legendary African American entertainers that stood next to the Reverend Martin Luther King and stared down racism firsthand.”
The system is broken to the detriment of African American owned businesses, especially women owned and operated ones such as ours. Entrenched problems with government actions are easier to ignore than to be fixed. For the last two years we have been victimized by our government’s failure to address the inequities in the procurement process as demonstrated in its latest RFB described previously. We have tried to bring attention to this problem in every manner we know.
