The Jaguars reached the AFC Championship Game in Bortles’ fourth season in 2017, and soon after Jacksonville signed its No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft to an extension he hadn’t previously proven he deserved.
Jacksonville cut Bortles after the season and took a $15.5 salary cap hit in 2019. That didn’t stop them from throwing big money at free agent quarterback Nick Foles. That didn’t work out either, and their QB position was in limbo until taking Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 in last year’s draft.APBoth Bortles and Mayfield are in-between quarterbacks, but in different ways. The Jags had no success with Bortles for three seasons before the surprising playoff run.
And in terms of the risk ... a short-term extension even if it didn’t work out wouldn’t have to destroy the Browns’ salary cap long-term. The Jags ate nearly $16 million on Bortles but still were able to sign another QB.
