The 7-7-1 Commanders control their own playoff destiny. The Commanders currently possess a 29% chance of qualifying for the postseason, according to FiveThirtyEight’s playoff predictor. A victory over the Browns would increase Washington’s chances to approximately 50%. A second win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18 would guarantee Washington a spot in the playoffs regardless of other results around the league.
The No. 144 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, Howell was expected to make several starts this season. Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew would have appreciated an opportunity to learn about Howell before entering another crucial offseason in relation to the quarterback position, but Washington’s schedule hasn’t played out that way.
Howell handled himself appropriately throughout the preseason. Howell completed 43-of-69 passing attempts for 547 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception while making appearances in all three of Washington’s exhibition contests. A dual-threat quarterback, Howell added 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns via 13 scrambles.
