The spring training hype was at a peak Tuesday with Japanese pitchers Shintaro Fujinami and Shohei Ohtani sharing the field in the big leagues for the first time in the A's loss to the Angels.
Less surprising, though, was Ohtani’s outing. The Angels’ two-way star looked sharp as ever, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings. He threw 34 pitches with two walks, two strikeouts and his fastball reaching as high as 98 mph.
The grand"show" was over once Ohtani left the mound, and the noticeable larger-than-usual media presence -- which included 40 members of Japanese media -- gathered around the Japanese phenoms. “It didn’t bother me,” Fujinami said of all the extra attention. “It’s just a spring game. But I know Japanese fans were looking forward to us facing each other. I thought this game showed Japanese fans some good entertainment.”
