An adult education program at the Saginaw public library helps immigrants with English, but also adapting to their new culture.

“I understand. A month ago, I had that problem too,” Erazo said, laughing. “The whole house. He got $7,000 in two days.”Growing up in Fort Worth, Horton didn’t know a Spanish speaker until he was a teenager. After living in Costa Rica for a year when he was 30, he fell in love with the language. A popular event is what library staff call “cultural dinners,” where community members come together while trying out food from different cultures. Some of the popular dishes have included China’s sweet treat of sachima and Egypt’s mahshi, a dish made of stuffed vegetables.Currently, the English program has 12 teachers: three are library staff and 9 are volunteers. The goal is to expand.

Horton knows from his experience with Spanish that learning a second language as an adult is no easy task. He found that many people tend to lack compassion for adult learners. Srijan Sharma, now 17, was excited to tell his mom she could learn English for free. She was ecstatic, he recalled. Saginaw Mayor Todd Flippo, who was raised in Saginaw and whose late mother was director of the library in the 1990s, said he is proud of the diversity of the program. At a cultural dinner at the library a couple of months ago, Flippo met with Latin American and African immigrants who were lawyers, engineers and entrepreneurs in their home countries. He’s “inspired by such persistence and strength” that it takes to move to a new country to provide a better life for their families.
