Shaker Heights High School's Rasheen Ali dropped boxing for football, gets drafted by Ravens in fifth round
Son of elite boxing trainer goes to Ravens in the fifth roundMAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio - Ra’sheen Ali runs DNA Level C Boxing Club in Southgate and dreamed of his son to become a professional boxer. But Rasheen the son’s dream ended and he followed a new dream, right into the NFL .
“I started like playing football when I was like six, sixth to like eighth grade then I took a break and I started again my senior year of high school,” said the Shaker Heights graduate. He ran from Shaker Heights to Marshall University right into the NFL, the fifth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens. But that was not the play his father had drawn up.
“That was the goal, for him to be the boxer,” said the elder Ali. “I mean because, I boxed, but once your career is over you try to duplicate it but ten times.”“I was fighting in a boxing tournament and I lost the boxing tournament. and then after I lost the boxing tournament, I started to play football,” said the 23-year-old. “And football was way more fun to be honest.”
“It was all about me and once I realized it’s not about me. It’s about him,” said his father. “It opened up the doors for success for him.”“After I went to go make a sandwich and I came back,” remembered Rasheen. “That’s when my phone was ringing, I picked it up and it was Harbaugh and he said, ‘You want to be a Raven?’ and I said, “Of course.’”Even though he’s not a boxer, the son will carry the lessons of the father with him every time he carries the ball.
