A year after opening at its Civic Center location, the Maria X Martinez clinic provides The City’s unhoused population with a wide array of services from substance use to behavioral health
Just a little more than a year after the Maria X Martinez Health Resource Center opened near San Francisco Civic Center, as many as 70 patients suffering from substance abuse, behavioral-health disorders and other issues pass through its doors each day.
The clinic is one of the few in San Francisco that doesn’t require prospective patients to make appointments, which Eveland said can often be one of the first barriers to receiving care.Patients either come in on their own, or one of The City’s programs for unhoused people — such as the Homeless Outreach Team — brings them to MXM.
The facility opened its doors just off Market and 6th streets in January 2023, replacing a clinic at Department of Public Health headquarters near City Hall. The old location was cramped in comparison, Eveland said, only able to see about 20 people a day. She said the new spot has “really been a game-changer,” providing more connections to communities in need.
