The Giants might not be able to resist bringing Luis Matos up to San Francisco for much longer.

Still, as he’s wont to do, Zaidi hedged the excitement a bit. He noted that the team has “got a pretty crowded outfield” and that Matos’ pathway to the big leagues would likely be “kind of circumstance-related, injury-related as much as anything else.”

But that was Thursday. Matos has hit three homers and stolen a couple of bases since then. He’s also made one of Zaidi’s comments about his stats outdated. Zaidi pointed out that Bryce Johnson, David Villar and Brett Wisely — who have all been back and forth between Sacramento and the big club this year — had a better OPS than Matos did in Triple-A this year. That's no longer true after Matos' weekend tear.

All at once, “going for it” has a very different meaning for the Giants. They struck out on the splashiest free agents this winter, and their biggest signings have mostly been middling or worse. But the long-promised wave of prospects seems to . Calling up Matos wouldn't guarantee a playoff spot, but it would be another wish come true for a fan base that is suddenly remembering the feeling.
