There are several clues that indicate Johnson, who lives in Palm Beach, Fla., could be pivoting to DeSantis. The RepublicanDemocrat Charlie Crist in November, so the size of Johnson's donations could speak to something more than wanting to boost his governor's re-election chances. And though Johnson eventually backed Trump, he was not a day-one supporter in the 2016 primaries. FEC records show that he first donated $1.5 million to former Florida Gov.
Nevertheless, Johnson — like many other conservative mega-donors — eventually came to embrace the 45th president. In the 2016 general election, Johnson gave $100,000 to Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee that splits donations between Trump's presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee. In the 2020 general election, he gave $435,200 to Trump Victory. He also contributed the maximum individual amount to Trump's re-election campaign in 2017.
