Giants option Heliot Ramos to clear roster space for Joc Pederson, who returned to DH and cleanup spot after 11-day absence.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants’ shorthanded lineup got one step closer to returning to full strength Sunday, activating Joc Pederson from the injured list and inserting the impactful left-handed bat into the middle of their order against Mets right-hander Tylor Megill.

“It feels good to have him back,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “He was our best left-handed bat against right-handed pitching last year. A force right in the middle of our lineup and a guy other teams don’t want to face.”In his absence, the Giants’ offense has nosedived, from the No. 2 OPS against right-handed pitching before Pederson’s IL stint to No. 20 in MLB with him on the shelf. They went 2-7 in the nine games without Pederson.

Lined up to face two more lefties against the Cardinals, who come to town for four game starting Monday, Kapler said that the pair of outfielders could “possibly” return in time for those games. It’s Jordan Montgomery scheduled to start the first game Monday and Steven Matz on Wednesday. While Kapler said Sunday that both outfielders are “trending in the right direction” and that the Giants “feel good about where they are and the progress that they made yesterday,” he cautioned on Saturday that they were rushing either back, despite their season-long struggles against left-handed pitching.
