The zone from southern Oklahoma to southern Kansas is under a rare Level 5 out of 5 threat of violent, tornado-producing thunderstorms.
A destructive tornado tore through the cities of Barnsdall and Bartlesville in northeast Oklahoma between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Central time. The National Weather Service first declared a tornado emergency, its most dire alert, as the twister swept directly through Barnsdall, a city of over 1,000 people about 30 miles north of Tulsa. “TORNADO EMERGENCY for Barnsdall,” the Weather Service wrote as the “confirmed large and destructive” storm passed. “This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
Substantial debris was detected by radar, lofted as high as 30,000 feet, as the storm passed over the city: Storm chaser footage indicates Barnsdall sustained significant damage and a radar algorithm estimates winds could have reached 170 to 190 mph. The storm next ripped through the south side of Bartlesville around 10 p.m., a city of nearly 40,000 about 15 miles to the northeast of Barnsdall, which was also placed under a tornado emergency.
