An approaching warm front caused severe thunderstorms to fire in areas west of Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, producing lime-size hail and gusty winds in some areas.
A severe thunderstorm warning in Will County is set to expire at 6:30 p.m., with wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour and quarter-size hail possible, according to officials.
Some eye-popping hail measurements were reported in LaSalle County, with some hailstones measuring two inches in diameter. For context, hail of that size is comparable to a lime or a medium-size egg, and can not only cause damage to vehicles and homes but can also injure humans and animals caught outside.Sign up for NBC Chicago newsletters.
