There was a time when employees were expected to do their jobs, keep their mouths shut, and call it a day at 5pm. Candid feedback was tacitly—and occasionallyso tacitly—discouraged. This often led to what Harvard Professor Leslie Perlow calls “the silent spiral,” in which people are too afraid to speak up, and the business suffers.
We know from our research that when employees feel heard and know their feedback matters, they feel more valued and connected to their organization. Their feedback is also a valuable tool to understand what employees want and need, and to learn how to change things for the better. In many cases, the best ideas for business improvement comes from employees—they are the closest to the action, after all.
We also found that employees at large companies feel less cared for, while those at midsize organizations see significantly more value in providing feedback—perhaps because they believe more strongly their voices are heard. Or perhaps because they have direct relationships with people who can affect change.What does this all mean for HR professionals today? That employees want to share, but they need to truly believe they’ll be heard.
