While the respiratory syncytial virus was often linked to pediatric illnesses, infectious disease expert Dr. Rontgene Solante said senior citizens and adults with comorbidities were at greater risk of getting a severe form of infection that may result in fatal complications. RSV is a contagious virus transmitted through inhalation or contact with the respiratory secretions of an infected person. Its symptoms include fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and congestion.
“Seniors and individuals with comorbidities may mistake their symptoms for a common cold or flu, not realizing they could be suffering from RSV, which can result in severe long-term damage or even fatal complications,” he said.According to the World Health Organization , an RSV infection increases hospitalization rates among senior citizens aged 65 and above. There was also an increased mortality rate among the frail elderly.
