Senators weighed in Monday on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s approval of the recommendation toon agricultural products until the end of 2023, following the endorsement of the National Economic and Development Authority .
“Nakita natin ang pagtaas ng presyo ng asukal at isda sa palengke noong pinigilan ang imports. Mukhang natauhan ang Malacañang at gusto nang iwasan ang naunang maling tantya at akala na kayang gawin ang madaliang import substitution,” she said. Poe said the government aims to bring down the cost of rice from countries outside of ASEAN but she noted the point of different agriculture groups that rice from outside of ASEAN, such as Pakistan, can still come in at lower prices even without bringing down the tariff.
“The issue last year was the volume of importation and the Senate had to step in for the concerns of hog raisers to be heard…We need to see if there was profiteering. SINAG has been complaining of the drop in farmgate prices of pork yet retail prices were hardly moving. The extension of EO No. 171 now is no assurance that prices will go down soon as it is just extending what is,” Poe said.
Further, Poe called on the government to penalize hoarders and smugglers who are allegedly behind the rising prices of agricultural products such as rice and onions.
