Washington — The Senate is set to convene for the impeachment trial of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday afternoon, with the Democratic-led upper chamber obliged to take on the House GOP-backed impeachment effort.Senators will be sworn in as jurors at 1 p.m. for the proceedings, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said. How long the trial will last remains to be seen, but Democrats are hoping to bring it to a swift end.
Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican, told reporters on Tuesday that Senate leadership was mulling a time agreement that would allow limited debate before a vote to ultimately dismiss or table the trial, estimating that it would take 'the better part of the afternoon' or into the evening and would offer 'an opportunity to build our case.' But an agreement appeared out of reach on Wednesday.
