D.C. officials say the confirmations will ease the burden on local courts, though some vacancies remain.

The U.S. Senate late Thursday confirmed seven judges to D.C.’s local courts, a move that partly addresses a spate of judicial vacancies that District officials, in recent appeals directly to Congress and the White House, said was causing significant slowdowns in the city’s justice system. The Senate by voice vote confirmed six judges to D.C. Superior Court — Kendra Briggs, Errol Arthur, Leslie A. Meek, Carl Ross, Laura E. Crane and Veronica M. Sanchez — and also confirmed Vijay Shanker to the D.

While seven judicial vacancies remain in the city’s courts, Schumer said in a statement Friday morning that with another two years of a Democratic majority, “the Senate will continue to work to fill as many vacancies as possible.”D.C. pleads for attention from Senate, Biden on big judicial vacancies In D.C.
