Former agency second-in-command Michael Whitaker has had a smooth path to confirmation, but will take over the FAA at a turbulent time.

The Senate confirmed Michael Whitaker as the new head of the Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday, filling a job that has been vacant for a turbulent 18-month span in which strains on airlines and air traffic controllers led to safety fears.Whitaker was approved 98-0, capping a rapid confirmation process that played out in a matter of weeks.

“My priority will be the safety of the flying public,” Whitaker said during the hearing. “They have put their trust in the FAA to keep aviation the safest way to travel, and the world has looked to us for decades as the gold standard.”The agency is stretched thin at facilities across the country, but the worker shortage has been especially acute

. Biden in September nominated Whitaker after the White House laid the groundwork for him to be confirmed.
