“What slavery was really about was separating families, about mutilating humans and even raping their wives. It was just devastating,” South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott said during a campaign event in Iowa Thursday. “So I would hope that every person in our country — and certainly running for president — would appreciate that.”
Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, is running against DeSantis in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. The controversy kicked off earlier this month after the Florida Board of Education approved a new curriculum for African American history which said thatSen.
