Beyond weight changes, the list of possible side effects is pretty steep. People taking steroids may deal with headaches; dizziness, insomnia, mood changes, or acne; extreme fatigue or muscle weakness; irregular periods; low libido; heartburn; and more. That’s just steroids—lupus drugs like DMARDs and other immunosuppressants come with their own sets of potential side effects.
Gomez has been vocal about the other ways treatment has affected her body too. Dr. Ludmer stresses that doctors are especially aware of the risks of long-term steroid use. “Rheumatologists try to use as little steroids as possible,” she says. “We prescribe them because we need to control the damage while we try to figure out other medications that can help.” Gomez echoed this point in her livestream: “Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like shit, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe they’re what helps me.”
