See inside NASA's 'Mars' habitat, where four people will simulate life on the Red Planet for a year
is tucked deep within the sprawling campus of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. And in two months, it will shelter four people for a 378-day mission that simulates living on the red planet.
“Ultimately, this information can be used by our mission planners and our vehicle developers to make informed decisions,” said Grace Douglas, NASA’s principal investigator for this Mars analog mission. “As we go to Mars, we are going to have more limited resources because resources are a big logistical challenge. We want to make sure that we are planning correctly.”
But unlike astronauts on the space station, who are circling the Earth and can receive regular shipments of fresh produce, the crew on Mars will be too far away for frequent deliveries.of their food will be stowed inside their habitat when they begin , and there will be some special meals for holidays.
Next to the crew’s common room is a workspace with a 3D printer and computers. In the fitness alcove, a rowing machine and stationary bicycle sit next to an all-in-one washer and dryer. There is a medical bay and second bathroom next to the airlock, which is used to exit the habitat and enter the sandbox.
“They’re going to be within a limited IT infrastructure,” Douglas said. “Some things might make it, and some things might not.”
