A street in Oakland is now named after the journalist killed there
OAKLAND — Nearly 15 years after Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey was gunned down, a section of 14th Street where he was killed will be renamed after him.Bailey was shot dead Aug. 2, 2007 while working on a story about the troubled finances and inner turmoil of the Your Black Muslim Bakery. A jury laterYusuf Bey IV, of ordering Bailey’s killing and convicted two other men, Antoine Mackey and Devaughndre Broussard, of carrying out the murder.
Bailey had studied journalism at Merritt College in Oakland and then San Jose State University. He worked at Black newspapers the Oakland Post and San Francisco’s Sun Reporter, then went to the Detroit News, Hartford Courant and United Press International before returning to Oakland to work at the Oakland Tribune for much of the 1990s and early 2000s.and the family who operated it.
In July 2020, then-District 3 councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney introduced a resolution commemorating Bailey with a street renaming and the City Council approved it. “Born and raised in East Oakland, he was a fixture in Oakland news and a prominent leader in the African American Community,” Gibson McElhaney wrote in a letter to her colleagues. “His murder remains a symbol of the importance of defending free speech and democratic values, My hope is that this commemoration continues to build awareness among future generations of Oaklanders of Chauncey’s contributions and passion for the betterment of Oakland.
A ceremony to unveil the commemorative “Chauncey Bailey Way” will take place at noon Saturday at the corner of 14th and Alice streets in coordination with the city and Bailey’s family, friends and colleagues.
