The city of Seattle will soon fix a notoriously dangerous spot for bicyclists by paving over railroad tracks on Shilshole Avenue NW under the Ballard Bridge.
After decades of complaints, Seattle City Council voted to pave over what Councilmember Dan Strauss called one of the greatest safety hazards for the stretch of the Burke-Gilman trail.
Navigating that stretch can be somewhat of a task for bicyclists. Some slow down to cross the railroad tracks at a 90-degree angle marked by the city to keep bike tires from getting stuck in the tracks.“It’s like whoever paints these turns doesn’t ride a bike. You can’t turn that way,” bicyclist Nichols Gleason explained.
“We received an indication that the railroad partners were no longer going to be using a portion of their tracks,” SDOT Senior Deputy Director Francisca Stefan explained. City Asphalt Crew Chief Shane Thomas marked the areas for paving. “We’re just trying to eliminate hazards.”Though some are happy with this work, they argue it does not solve the greater problem of protecting bicyclists in need of a bike lane along Shilshole.
