It's time for the annual Seattle Public Safety Survey and members of the public are once again being encouraged to take part.
Seattle Public Safety Survey seeks public opinion on crime, police response times and community concernsAn image of Seattle's skyline. Anyone who lives or works in Seattle is being asked to take part in this year’s Seattle Public Safety Survey, which helps inform police on community perceptions of crime.
The survey measures perceptions of police and gauges community concerns regarding public safety issues among different neighborhoods. When compared alongside crime data, community perceptions can give a more accurate picture of the impact crime has on an area, according to researchers. This is the ninth year the survey has been conducted through a partnership among the city, Seattle police, and Seattle University’s Crime & Justice Research Center. The results help shape the Micro Community Policing Plans for each of the city’s 58 neighborhoods. The responses are also used as talking points for a series of discussions involving community members and police staff from May through August.
Last year’s results also showed one of the lowest scores for police legitimacy, which refers to the public’s faith in law enforcement and its willingness to grant officers deference. The Seattle Public Safety Survey will be administered through Nov. 30 in 11 languages. To participate go to
