Seattle firefighter crews rescued a pilot Thursday night after his seaplane crashed into Elliot Bay.
The Seattle Fire Department first tweeted about the crash around 6:30 p.m. The plane went down into the water off of the 2800 block of Alaskan Way.
“We saw the plane come in, it was a small glider, kind of low and slow, and as it was approaching the water that’s when we lost sight of it,” said witness Karla Saur. “The Coast Guard was there within maybe 30 seconds.”“He popped up and was hanging on treading water onto the wings as it was sinking and fully submerged and he started waving his hands for help and one of the boats came to get him and everyone was shouting go faster, go faster!” said Sarah Ball.
Crews said the 42-year-old pilot was able to self-extricate from the plane, was recused by Fire Boat 5, and brought to shore with minor injuries. Crews also confirmed there was only one person in the plane. “It was pretty graceful he came down it seemed like he was just trying to get as close as he could to the fire station down there, so it was really graceful planned out, trying to get rescued,” said witness DJ Zevenbergen.
Crews said the plane sunk a few hundred feet from the pier and they put a buoy to mark where it went down. Crews also said they are coordinating with the Coastguard, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Federal Aviation Administration on transition recovery.Crews are investigating reports of a seaplane crash into the water off of the 2800 block of Alaskan Way. Please avoid the area.
