Alabama guard Mark Sears is returning for the 2023-24 basketball season after withdrawing from the NBA Draft.
Sears averaged 12.5 points per game last season, his first with the Crimson Tide after transferring from Ohio. The Muscle Shoals native was among five Alabama players who declared for the NBA Draft, but is the only one thus far to pull out and return to school.Though not a major surprise, Sears’ return is a boost for an Alabama team that had undergone major roster turnover since the end of the season.
The Crimson Tide as of Tuesday has three open scholarships, Oats said at the SEC spring meetings in Destin. He said Sears received good feedback in the NBA Draft process but made the right decision returning for a final season with Alabama. Quinerly, who began his college career in 2018, was testing the NBA waters along with a handful of teammates. Oats said the guard worked out with the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday but is hopeful he’ll be back for a third season with the Tide.
“With Charles’ decision, I mean he’s a great kid and we love him, but that surprised us a little bit with the feedback we got,” Oats said. “You didn’t really pursue bigs in the portal because you anticipate but now you have to figure out another option.”
