Sea of Stars wears its RPG influences on its sleeves, but rarely feels burdened by those expectations or particularly shackled to them.

Its world grows into a wonderful sprawl of oddities and uniquely feel-good and fun locales that cover the staples of the genre and then some, like the town of Lucent, where the people sit in a bar called The First Stage of Grief and joke about how they’re all going to die. Corny as it may be, you meet a pair of pirates named Klee’shae and Valtraid . It peppers in humor at the expense of the genre, but with a clear admiration of it too.
That comfort extends to some of the more superficial aspects of the game, like the ability to cook meals that serve as your potions, elixirs, and such. Every recipe calls for certain materials that can be found in the world, and can be prepared at campfires where a mouth-watering series of sounds and illustrations play out that had me reaching for my own plate and spoon.
Live mana comes out of enemies that are hit with basic physical attacks, which will also restore MP, encouraging players to dispense with magic abilities frequently. The live mana, which drops at most three charges onto the arena, can be used to boost any and all abilities available, even granting basic attacks an element that can assist in taking out the aforementioned locks.
‘ individual skill sets are woefully short though, plateauing early on except for combos and ultimate moves. It is then refreshing that there is as much complexity as I’ve suggested, to make up for the lack of abilities that can define the cast better or even just allow for greater flexibility in battle.
