The film is the fifth sequel to the 1996 meta slasher classic Scream, which introduced fans to the Ghostface killer, who torments victims over the phone while making frequent references to classic horror movies. The caption of the post, which is written in the voice of Ghostface, says "Would you like to play a game, [New York Times]?" The crossword puzzle contains clues that pertain to slasher films in general, the Scream franchise specifically, and even a few that include details about the setting of Scream 6.
Throughout the franchise, various killers have utilized this M.O., with a particularly memorable moment in 2011's Scream 4 satirizing the recent glut of horror remakes by having the victim rattle off a long list of potential titles in response to a question. The latest film, Scream 2022, upped the ante when Ghostface taunted Tara Carpenter by asking her questions about the fictional franchise Stab, which is inspired by the events of previous Scream films.
