Scream 6 continues to exceed box office projections as it closes out its opening weekend, handily nabbing the highest opening of the entire franchise.
Scream 6 continues to exceed box office expectations as it closes out a record-breaking opening weekend. The film, which is the sixth entry in the meta slasher franchise, is the first time that a Scream film has followed the entry by just one year since Scream 2 in 1997. The new entry, which premiered on March 10, follows the survivors of Scream 2022 to New York City, where a brand new Ghostface killer begins a fresh spate of killings.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Per Variety, the opening weekend of Scream 6 has continued to thwart expectations by raking in a total of $44.5 million at the domestic box office. This is $1 million above yesterday's projections, which in turn were $3.5 million above the original top projections for the weekend. This total has handily earned the film the highest opening weekend of the entire Scream franchise.
Because of the original Scream's unusual path to becoming a hit, it remains the highest-grossing Scream film of them all in terms of its lifetime gross. The next two highest-ranked films are also swapped, as Scream 2 is No. 2 with Scream 3 trailing just behind it. This may indicate that Scream 6's franchise-best opening might not necessarily result in it being the highest-grossing film in the Scream franchise at the end of the day.
One huge impediment to Scream 6 dominating beyond this weekend is the glut of franchise tentpoles that are coming soon, including John Wick: Chapter 4, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. However, the film has already grossed higher than the entire run of Scream 4, so it could be well on its way toward a record-breaking total run if it plays its cards right. At any rate, it seems more or less certain that a Scream 7 will be on its way sooner than later.
