PGA of America officials announced that play had been delayed by at least an hour and ESPN reported that Scheffler was detained and in handcuffs. Players and officials were allowed to proceed to the course as there was a massive backup of traffic due to the traffic fatality. But the police officer, apparently unaware that Scheffler was a player in the tournament, began to scream at the golfer to get out of the car and when he exited the car was immediately placed in handcuffs.
“The police officers around the patrol car had no idea he was Scottie Scheffler,’’ Darlington said on ESPN. The unidentified man was trying to cross Shelbyville Road and outside the gate around 5 a.m. when he was struck by a bus in a dedicated bus lane. Local police said the man died at the scene.Bob Harig is a golf writer for SI.com and the author of the book "DRIVE: The Lasting Legacy of Tiger Woods," which publishes in March and can be ordered here.
