Rep. Perry says McCarthy “rejected” chance to become House Speaker
McCarthy gave the Freedom Caucus “a vague ultimatum lacking in specifics and substance” on Dec. 31, Perry said, adding that McCarthy “declined” an offer to assure him the 218 votes needed to win the speakership.
McCarthy, Perry continued, also rejected the Freedom Caucus’ request for votes on individual earmarks that would require a two-thirds majority to pass and a commitment to have all amendments that would cut spending be considered on the House floor.And, Perry said, McCarthy refused to stop trying to defeat conservative candidates in Republican primaries.
“At this stage, it cannot be a surprise that expressions of vague hopes reflected in far too many of the crucial points still under debate are insufficient,” the signees wrote.
