Scott McLaughlin wins Portland, sets up five-way IndyCar title fight.
Even by IndyCar standards, Scott McLaughlin had an odd pathway to the series. He made his name in Australian Supercars, a category of super touring cars with just about nothing in common with an open wheel racer. He won so many championships that then-Supercars team owner Roger Penske brought him to IndyCar anyway, a decision that seemed somewhat shaky during a rookie year with just one podium.
McLaughlin was in dominant form throughout today's 110-lap race in Portland, pulling away from the field early and never facing any serious threat from second-placed teammate Will Power under green. Expected chaos at a Monza-like turn 1 never actually happened, opening up the beginning of a long green flag run for McLaughlin to build his lead.
The championship picture is much more complicated than that, however. Power leads a group of five drivers with a mathematical shot at a title heading into the finale. His finish of second today secured a stronger position going into that race. A late fade on the harder black tires today leaves Josef Newgarden 20 points back of Power, while Scott Dixon is tied with Newgarden after a late charge on the day's lone restart.
That race will run at Laguna Seca next Sunday. This time next week, IndyCar will have its 2022 champion.
