School counselors overcome unexpected challenges paid civicnation
I am regularly expected to “fix” a student’s problem, as though I have a magic wand. Across the country we see a critical lack of access to mental health resources, especially for children and adolescents. Many of our students who are severely depressed or suicidal have no way to receive treatment because the nearest resource is in a completely different county, and they don’t have transportation.
Anyone who meets me will know that my passion is school counseling. I’ve affectionately been called the Energizer bunny because I never give up on a student, an idea or a dream. It’s a heavy burden knowing it’s a possibility that despite all my efforts, children may not get the help they truly need. I fear that a student who needs help will be overlooked because I am spread too thin.
School counselors can call on resources to help shoulder the burden. I have learned that sometimes what’s best for students can make others uncomfortable, and we have to be ready to have those uncomfortable conversations. I have introduced myself to my community resources and brought in specialty organizations for things like suicide and self-harm prevention for all students.
