This $100 running shoe has a bouncy midsole and well-fitting upper.
For more than four decades, EVA was the main midsole foam used because it was cheap, easy to work with, and delivered a good blend of cushioning and performance. In the last five years, however, there’s been a race to create the most lively, bouncy, and lightweight foam that still proves durable for high mileage. That’s a tough combination to achieve. Some bouncy midsoles likeare heavy; Pebax-based foam like Nike’s ZoomX isn’t durable.
In tests at the Runner’s World Shoe Lab, we found the Forever Floatride delivers better than average cushioning, especially from the very soft forefoot. But, the shoe doesn’t feel mushy when you pick up the pace, which we learned when we hit the road. One of our testers laced them up to race a marathon just five days after receiving his test pair.
Notably different, however, is the upper feels a little more premium. Sure, you won’t mistake the Forever for a plush Nimbus, but the lining is a little softer and more satiny. That may seem like a small deal, but it’s significant when somebody is shopping for a shoe. It’s known as “the war on the floor”: If you have a positive impression of the shoe before you even take your first stride, you’re more likely to buy the shoe.
The shoe also looks a little faster, thanks to the pointy heel collar. It’s a largely cosmetic feature we’ve seen on a handful of shoes over the last couple years. But, here, it curves up and away from your ankle, so it doesn’t rub against your Achilles, our testers found.Arch: High | Gait: Underpronator | Footstrike: Heel strike
“The Reebok last must fit me well or something, because these shoes were a perfect joy to wear from the instant I put them on. The upper is flexible, the sole is comfortable. It is possible that the shoe might get too hot during the summer, as the material feels a little less breathable than I might prefer. The cushioning isn’t too soft or too hard—it’s a little too ‘much’ though. I would prefer less shoe, to feel the road a little more, to feel the speed.
