“The Board wishes to stress the urgency of this work. Our community immediately requires additional stabilization beds,” Custead wrote.

The letter followed the board’s receipt of a report from the city’s Street Activity and Community Support Program in May. The report noted an increase in the number of people sleeping in vestibules of buildings, encampments, parks and on public sidewalks and benches in recent years. The report showed 14 per cent of the 2,630 calls to the Community Support Program involving 3,105 people required city police assistance.

She added that due to a lack of housing and facilities, police are often left with no place to take people and they’re ultimately released back into the community with no supports.
