The Health Canada exemption expired after one year. Now, over 500 days since he reapplied, Hartle has shared a letter with Postmedia from the regulator denying his application.
The Health Canada letter references Hartle’s use of a program in British Columbia that offers psilocybin therapy under a different type of exemption meant for doctors, not patients. The letter then suggests Hartle access “existing regulatory pathways” to get his treatment instead of a personal exemption.Article content
Health Canada declined to comment for this story because its officials don’t discuss individual cases “due to privacy and safety reasons.” The letter to Hartle acknowledges the financial barriers he has cited about going back to B.C. and suggests that he find a local doctor to work with or enrol in a clinical trial.Thomas Hartle, a Saskatoon father who has terminal cancer, says his dog Ellie brings him comfort while he undergoes chemo treatment.
The treatment itself is supervised by his therapist. Hartle said he typically wears a blindfold and has headphones with music playing. From there, he said the psychedelic experience causes him to feel like he’s “existing as a consciousness in ways that have nothing to do with this life, or my difficulties with my cancer or anything like that. It’s very freeing, for me, and it reinforces the idea that perhaps this life that we’re experiencing isn’t all there is, perhaps there is more out there.
