Critics say it will make students feel isolated and unsafe, and could put them at risk.
“There are so many statistics that state that these students who are gender- and sexually-diverse, they need that safe space or their mental health is going to suffer. Instances of depression and self-harm and suicide, all of these are real things that happen to these youngsters.
With the 2023-24 school year set to begin in a few weeks, Regina Public Schools CEO Darren Boldt said the new policy will be very complicated to implement —“We work with parents as much as we possibly can, but we wouldn’t deny a student if they felt that they couldn’t talk to their parents,” Boldt said. “Obviously, there is a process that we would go through to ensure that we’ve tried our very best, but we don’t want to put any students in jeopardy.
Julian Wotherspoon, executive director of Planned Parenthood Regina, said the policy change is “disappointing, but.” That won’t make it any easier on the students who will soon be returning to their classrooms throughout the province, Wotherspoon added. In a statement, UR Pride called the ministry’s decision “nothing short of embarrassing, violent, and abhorrent.”
